Thank you for your interest in joining Swansea Bay University Health Board.
Swansea Bay University Health Board (SBUHB) is one of seven Local Health Boards in Wales, responsible for NHS services in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot, as well as some specialist regional services.
Covering a population of circa 390,000 in the Neath Port Talbot and Swansea areas we have a budget of over £1bn and employ a workforce of circa 13,500. We are proud to deliver services within a context which has at its heart the unification and integration of care for the people of Wales; and recognise the importance of our role as an anchor institution in the region, particularly as a key contributor to the reduction of health inequalities in the region.

We are on a journey of recovery and do not underestimate the complexity of what lies ahead. As a Health Board in enhanced monitoring for planning and finance; and with scrutiny placed on planned and unscheduled care, we have much to do to realise the improvements we know are needed. We do not underestimate the complexity of what lies ahead but we are ambitious for change and committed to improvement. That’s evidenced by our ambitious ten year vision to become a High Quality Organisation, recognising how quality and financial sustainability go hand in hand and you can’t have one without the other. And how will we become a High Quality Organisation? We’ll get there by adopting our One Bay Way mantra, working as one team, delivering a leading integrated health and care system that delivers the best possible care for our population whilst also taking tangible steps to proactively improve the health of our population.
We know that our people are our greatest asset and the key to achieving our vision – something reflected in our recently refreshed People Strategy. At this pivotal time in our journey, robust, compassionate leadership of our workforce from our Board will ensure our staff are well supported within a culture of fairness, openness and learning to achieve better outcomes for those we serve.
We are looking for a new Chief Executive
Having been appointed to the role of Chair earlier this year I am excited for the journey ahead. I believe passionately in the power of public service as a force for good. I was born and brought up in Swansea and my family home has always been in the City. As such I share the ambition for improvement and commitment to the people served by the SBUHB.

Ensuring robust governance and leadership will be critical to our future success and our new Chief Executive will be responsible for working closely with myself and the wider Board to provide strategic leadership, develop and drive organisational culture, and work collaboratively to achieve the aims of the Health Board.
We are seeking an individual with a track record of operating at Board level within a comparably complex context able to demonstrate experience of leading and inspiring a dispersed multi-professional workforce through a journey of improvement and transformation. We understand that changes in leadership can be unsettling and as such we are seeking an individual able to lead with compassion in order to navigate our people through difficult and challenging times. We strive to support a culture of fairness, openness and learning in order to develop a workforce that has at its heart a commitment to living and demonstrating these values in all that they do. To this end we are seeking a Chief Executive whose values align to our own and who is able to evidence experience of embedding culture and organisational values successfully and achieving workforce engagement delivering improved outcomes in quality, performance and service.

A message from Jan Williams, Chair
We are looking for a new Executive Director of Nursing and Midwifery
As one of seven Local Health Boards in Wales, we are proud to deliver services within a context which has at its heart the unification and integration of care for the people of Wales. By providing primary, secondary, tertiary, community, mental health and learning disability, and dental services, SBUHB is committed to improving the lives of our 390,000 residents. We are led by our values of ‘caring for each other, working together, always improving’ – values which we are proud were developed by more than 6,000 staff, patients, their families and carers. With 12,500 staff and a turnover of around £1 billion, we are not just an anchor institution for the Neath Port Talbot and Swansea areas, but a significant regional partner across Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, Neath Port Talbot and Swansea.
We are on a journey of recovery and do not underestimate the complexity of what lies ahead. As a Health Board in enhanced monitoring for planning and finance; and with scrutiny placed on planned and unscheduled care, there is much to do in order to realise the change needed to deliver safer services and improved outcomes to those we serve. We are ambitious for change and committed to sustained improvement – our focus on quality and safety is resolute, demonstrated by our recently refreshed People Strategy which is aligned to our new 10-year Health Board vision to become a High Quality Organisation.
We know our people are our greatest asset. By prioritising the development of our culture in line with our values and supporting our staff within a culture of fairness, openness and learning we know we can achieve better outcomes for those we serve and play a central role in our city, our region, and across the NHS in Wales.
We are now seeking an inclusive, inspirational and dynamic Executive Director of Nursing and Midwifery to work closely with our new Chief Executive, wider Board and collaboratively with system partners to ensure that SBUHB makes a significant contribution to health improvement, reduction of health inequalities and continuous improvements in quality of health care provision. The appointed individual will, together with the Medical Director, lead jointly on the quality and safety agenda and will have accountability around improving population health and patient service by providing appropriate leadership, challenge and support both internally and system wide.
This is a key appointment for SBUHB. As an experienced, values based nursing leader who thrives in complex multi-stakeholder environments, the successful individual will bring a track record of managing diverse and complex portfolios and dedication to building and developing cultures which support the continuous improvement of services. We are seeking a strategic, compassionate leader able to provide professional leadership to our Nurses, Midwives and Specialist Community Public Health Nurses and a relentless commitment to delivering better outcomes for the communities we serve.
If you have ambition that matches our own; a commitment to supporting and nurturing staff to realise sustainable improvement and a passion for delivering citizen focused service, we are keen to hear from you.
